Top of Rail Lubrication
SNYDER has begun development of a top of rail friction modifier formulation and applicator called . The patent pending applicators are designed to be mounted on both sides of the lead car truck frames and are powered with compressed air from the locomotive. The applicators are capable of applying friction modifier directly to the tread of the wheel which is transferred to the rail and back through the train - applying directly to the taping line on the rail.
The solid polymer lubricant has been proven to reduce the coefficient of friction on the rail to within acceptable limits and can provide residual benefits for subsequent trains. Testing at the Transportation Technology Center indicates energy savings of up to 8%.
